Buffalo Center and Thompson libraries reopening

As libraries are allowed to reopen, the State Library of Iowa is encouraging all libraries to take some necessary precautions. Patrons and staff will maintain social distancing, and all materials will be sanitized before being returned to the shelves.

Beginning this week, the Buffalo Center Public Library will be staffed from 1 to 3 p.m. each weekday afternoon. People are asked to call ahead to request books and videos and to set a time for pick up. Library staff will get the items checked out and have them ready to be picked up by the front door.

The library phone number is 641-562-2546. People may also email the library with requests at bclib@wctatel.net.

As the library is practicing social distancing and thoroughly disinfecting returned items, patrons will not be allowed to browse the books or use computers at this time. The library catalog can be viewed online at www.buffalocenter.lib.ia.us. From the Buffalo Center Public Library home page, click on “Go to Buffalo Center Public Library online catalog here” to see what books are available at the library.

“You can look online at the books in our collection and choose some or just give us a list of your favorite authors, and we will try to pick some good reads for you,” said Library Director Sharon Hippen.

All books and DVDs must be returned to the book drop.

The library cannot accept donations at this time.

Thompson Library

The Thompson Public Library is also opening with limited hours this week, as it implements a gradual reopening plan due to continuing concerns for the safety of library patrons and staff.

The Thompson Library will be open from 2 to 4 p.m. to fill patron requests. People may call the library at 641-584-2829 or send an email to thomplib@wctatel.net to request books or DVDs. Library staff will prepare people’s selections for pick up in the library’s entry. Patrons may also use the library website to access their online catalog and place holds on materials there. The website address is www.thompson.lib.ia.us.

“At this time we cannot ensure the safety of staff and patrons by fully opening the library building to the public,” said Library Director Fairy Florence. “We take requests for books or DVDs by phone, email or through the online catalog and will make arrangements with you to pick up materials in the entry. Items may be returned to the book drop. We look forward to the time when can fully reopen and welcome our patrons back to the library safely.”

Florence thanks library patrons for their patience and cooperation during this challenging time.

Lakota Library continues service

People can also continue to pick up materials at the Lakota Public Library. Sue Kearney, Library Director, says she has been maintaining regular hours at the library for people to pick up items from the entryway or have them delivered curbside. She has also made some home deliveries. People interested in checking something out from the Lakota Library can call 515-886-2312 or visit the library’s website at www.youseemore.com/NILC/Lakota to view the catalog online.

Kearney says libraries in Kossuth County are considering opening their doors again on May 15.
