Gerhald Maass
Gerhald E. Maass, 89, of Buffalo Center, died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2022 at the Titonka Care Center. A memorial service was held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022, at Dell Lutheran Church in Frost, MN with Pastor Joe Ocker officiating. Visitation was held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022, at Dell Lutheran Church in Frost.
Gerhald Edwin Maass was born June 4, 1933, in Lincoln Township, Kossuth County, the son of Adolph and Vera (Melz) Maass. He grew up on his father’s farm Northeast of Lakota and graduated from Lakota High School in 1951. Following high school, Gerhald worked in Elmore, MN as an electrician for a period of time.
On April 22, 1955, Gerhald enlisted in the United States Army and served two active years. He then was inactive reserve until being honorably discharged March 31, 1963.
On April 7, 1957, Gerhald was united in marriage to Vivian J. (Hartranft) Maass in Spring Lake Heights, NJ. Together they made their home in Buffalo Center. He farmed for many years in the Buffalo Center area and also continued working as an electrician. He and Jean enjoyed delivering motorhomes for Winnebago after he retired from farming.
Gerhald was an outdoorsman. He enjoyed gardening, camping, fishing, mission trips, and livestock – specifically chickens. Gerhald also loved baking and photography. Both won him ribbons at the county fairs. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. His faith was very important. He was a member of Dell Lutheran Church in Frost, where he was a church Elder and Sunday School Teacher and Pioneer Club leader. He was also a member of the Blue Earth Camera Club.
He is survived by his wife, Jean of Buffalo Center; sons, Paul (Melody) Maass of Waukesha, WI, John (Sarah) Maass of Fairfax, MN, Michael (Crystal) Maass of Buffalo Center; daughter, Amy Maass of Dike, IA; daughter-in-law, Linda Troyer-Maass; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; siblings, DeWayne (Berneice) of Buffalo Center and Verna Gifford of Kearney NE; brothers-in-law Harold Bennett Jr. of Hobe Sound, FL and Kenneth Hartranft of Clearwater Beach, FL; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death are his parents, Adolph and Vera Maass; an infant brother; son, Daniel Maass; sister-in-law, Janet Bennett; and brother-in-law, Allen Gifford.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Dell Lutheran Church Missions in Gerhald’s name.
