Communities change Memorial Day plans

Most large gatherings of people remain prohibited in Iowa, and as a result, local communities are canceling their regular programs held in honor of Memorial Day.

Buffalo Center, Lakota and Rake typically hold annual Memorial Day programs, but organizers in all three communities have announced they will not be having regular programs on Monday, May 25. However, Buffalo Center and Lakota plan to hold services at their cemeteries that day.

Buffalo Center will go forward with a 9 a.m. service on Memorial Day at the Conflux of Crosses at Graceland Cemetery. The program includes the reading of the Honored Roll of veterans buried at Graceland and Olena Mound cemeteries, a rifle salute, and the playing of “Taps”.

In Lakota, a military service will be held at Maple Hill and St. Paul Lutheran cemeteries at 10:30 a.m. on Memorial Day. The service will begin at Maple Hill and then move to the Lutheran cemetery.

Rake still plans to honor deceased members of the armed services with a display of flags and crosses with poppies on the lawn south of Town Hall.
