CDC extends eviction protections for some counties

The CDC is issuing a new order temporarily halting evictions in counties with heightened levels of community transmission in order to respond to recent, unexpected developments in the trajectory of the COVID-19 pandemic, including the rise of the Delta variant. It is intended to target specific areas of the country where cases are rapidly increasing, which likely would be exacerbated by mass evictions.

The new CDC order was issued on Aug. 3 and expires Oct. 3, 2021. The order applies to counties experiencing substantial and high levels of community transmission. According to the CDC, Winnebago County saw substantial community transmission of COVID-19 during the week of August 1-7, while Kossuth County had high levels of transmission.

If a county that is covered by the order no longer experiences substantial or high levels of community transmission for 14 consecutive days, then the order will no longer apply in that county, unless or until it again experiences substantial or high levels while the order is in effect.
